I took a week away from everything—emails, most news, even my beloved to-do lists—just empty space in my calendar and mind.
And yes, it was wonderful, but of course not a “cure” to feeling the funk.
On our family spring break adventure, I sat on the deck of our coastal ranch respite watching the clouds change shape and a bird dance around the branches above.

I love making space, and I needed days to simply play. I also found myself ruminating on how tired I am of it all. The weight of the world’s unending chaos, the nonstop waking and moving without stopping between responsibilities, and the striving for creativity, for meaning, for ease.
I’ve been doing this creativity thing professionally for nearly 20 years now, and longer than that in my own projects, and still sometimes it just feels hard.
Then I returned home and opened an email congratulating me for 52 weeks of showing up here week after week. Funny timing.
Do you ever have those stretches of time where your motivation feels … MIA? The to-do list is waiting, the calendar is full but the last thing you want to do is any of it?
Same. And I think this weird low-energy, low-motivation funk I’m feeling is more common than we creatives often let on. 🤷♀️
So for now, in between chaperoning field trips, endless baseball activities, work and general living, I’m doing my best to just make space. I’ve even read three books in the past week for fun.
Question for the comments:
How do you get motivated when you’re feeling tired and uninspired?

One of the books I finished this week—How to Know a Person: The Art of Seeing Others Deeply and Being Deeply Seen by David Brooks. Now I want to re-read it and take notes.
My husband and I finished the first season of Running Point, the new Netflix comedy from Mindy Kaling. It was fun and easy to watch.
